XSD files are "XML Schemas" that describe the structure of a XML document.
The validator checks for well formedness first, meaning that your XML file must be parsable using a DOM/SAX parser, and only then does it validate your XML against the XML Schema.
The "item" element appears twice, and it contains a "title", an optional "note" element, a "quantity", and a "price" element.
However, it seems most people on Windows use an XML Editor, such as Notepad (as described in Nate's answer) or XML Notepad 2007 as suggested by Steve C (there are also several commercial editors which I won't mention here).
